i really don’t understand this math problem at all nor do i understand direct variations..can someone help? :

For 1992 through 1994, the per capita consumption of fish and shellfish in the US increased at a rate that was approximately linear. in 1992, the per capita consumption was 14.7 pounds and in 1994 it was 15.1 pounds.
A) write a linear model for the per capita consumption of fish and shellfish in the US. Let t represent the number of years since 1992

B) What would you expect the per capita consumption of fish and shellfish to be in 2002?

A) Ok the maths goes along these lines:

1992 = 14.7
1994 = 15.1

The linear model means it’s a straight line graph, so this is what I would do:

15.1 – 14.7 = 0.4
1994 – 1993 = 2

Therefore over two years the growth has been 0.4 pounds, therefore each year the growth is 0.2 pounds, equation:

0.4 / 2 = 0.2

So the linear equation would be:

15.1 + (t x 0.2) = pounds

B) So for 2002 the difference in years is:

2002 – 1994 = 8

So the value of t in the equation from (A) is 8 so put this into the equation:

15.1 + (8 x 0.2) = 15.1 + 1.6 = 16.7

So the answer is 16.7 pounds per capita
